While it was fun to watch a big budget horror movie finally play in the fertile grounds of Latinx superstitions, I wish we had a better reason to break out our sage. Linda Cardellini is an American actress of Italian roots, but with strong connections to the Latino world I love being able to be part of something that is important for this culture.
In a fit of madness, Maria drowned her children in a nearby river. Realizing the enormity of her actions, she was consumed by guilt and sorrow, causing her to drown herself in the same river. It is believed that upon her death, her spirit was unable to find peace and now wanders the earth in search of her lost children.
